The ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj has highlighted a unique spiritual personality, 'IIT Baba' Abhey Singh. A former aerospace engineer, Mr. Singh has gained major attention during this grand religious gathering. His father, Karan Grewal, an advocate from Jhajjar, Haryana, is very eager for his son to return home. “Our family wishes Abhey to return home,” he told. “But after achieving so much, it's not easy for him to come back.”

Mr. Singh has always been considered “extraordinary and the best” in studies by his father. After completing his studies at IIT Bombay, Mr. Singh undertook a Master's in Design and also worked in New Delhi and Canada. Eventually, he left Canada and came back to India, and spent winters in spiritual destinations like Shimla, Mussoorie, and Dharamshala. “After that, he decided to become a sanyasi,” his father told to NDTV. “He was always interested in spirituality."

When asked if he maintained contact with his son, Mr. Grewal stated, “I was in contact with him until six months ago. After that, he blocked me and all communication with me.”

He added further, “I heard he was in Haridwar and wanted to visit him but couldn't, and now he has gone viral in the media.” Mr. Grewal wishes for his son to return. “Obviously, I want him to come home,” he told to NDTV. “His mother asked him to come back, to take care of the family, but he replied that after becoming a sanyasi, that's no longer possible.” Reflecting on his feelings regarding Mr. Singh's choices, Mr. Grewal expressed that, “He was always independent, so what he's decided, he has decided. Everyone has the right to live their life the way they choose, and I can't pressure him.”

When asked if he would make one last effort to persuade him, he responded, “I will try, but in my heart, I feel that after reaching this stage, he's unlikely to listen to us.”

In a recent conversation, IIT Baba Abhey Singh shared that “domestic violence” during his childhood times shaped his spiritual journey. Although he did not experience it firsthand, he was “traumatised” by the constant disputes between his parents, he revealed later on. To escape the turmoil at home, Mr. Singh found peace in studying late into the night. When questioned about his choice not to marry, he acknowledged that witnessing his parents' conflicts influenced his decision to pursue a peaceful, solitary existence.
