Ratan Tata was an industrialist and an efficient chairman of the Tata Group, but he is also famous philanthropist. Yet a lesser-known facet of his life adds an intriguing layer to his legacy: his dare devil spirit that made him to fly.

Thomas Matthews, who write a biography of Ratan Tata, revealed many shocking facts about his fantastic aviator abilities. “Stunt flying acrobatics are some of the activities that have been associated with him,” added Matthew. “He also was fond of pulling up the nose, switching off the engine and frightening everybody else on board.”

These bushy manoeuvres depicts an adventurous personality as well as as his business mind was bold. Tata developed an interest in the aviation industry during his college years at Cornell University in the 1960s when he got his pilot’s license. This predilection for flight enabled him to escape the drudgeries of business life, and I remember him flying tiny planes. It showed his spirit and his passion for adventures and travels by flying of planes and other aircrafts.

Of the many proud moments of his life, flying F-16 fighter aircraft as a co-pilot at the Aero India show is perhaps one of the most cherished events that happened twice, first in 2007 and again in 2011. Age wise, there is no doubt he was 69 years, but the performance showed hardworking and young man, which shows that age cannot be an adjective to work. Further the appearances on Aero India, the biggest air-show in India it hinted at his passion towards aviation and technology and he became quite popular and respected figure at the event.

Ratan Tata passed away on October 9, 2024, at the age of 86, after critical illness. While he is gone but the stories of his aerial adventures and his fearless stories continue to inspire countless individuals.
