Rescue efforts in Assam’s Dima Hasao district persisted on Wednesday, with the recovery of one body from the coal mine in the 3 Kilometres area of Umrangso, where 9 workers had been trapped since Monday. The body was retrieved by army divers on the 3rd day of the operation, as hopes for the survival of the remaining eight workers continue to fade gradually.

The workers became shicked when a sudden influx of water inundated the coal mine. Divers found out the body early in the morning, although the deceased's identity has yet to be established. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the recovery on twitter, stating, “21 Para divers have just recovered a lifeless body from the bottom of the well. Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving family.”

He made sure that the rescue operation was in full swing, with personnel from the army, navy, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) laboring diligently at the scene.

Sarma also included that the mine appeared to be unauthorized, and that one individual had been arrested in regard to the incident. Navy personnel are also present at that site, preparing to dive in after the army and NDRF divers.
