The maritime security centre of Oman reported on Tuesday that the 16-strong crew of the Comoros-flagged oil tanker "Prestige Falcon," which capsized off the coast of Oman, are still missing. The sinking was first reported on Monday.
The ill-fated crew includes 13 Indian nationals and three Sri Lankans. The Omani maritime centre shared this update on the social media platform X.
The centre also told Reuters that the vessel remains "submerged, inverted," without confirming if it had stabilized or if there were any oil leaks.
According to LSEG shipping data, the tanker was en route to the Yemeni port of Aden when it capsized near Oman's major industrial port of Duqm. The "Prestige Falcon," a 117-metre oil products tanker built in 2007, is typically used for short coastal voyages.
Duqm, located on Oman’s southwest coast, is a significant industrial hub, housing major oil and gas projects and a large oil refinery. The industrial zone is Oman's largest economic project, underscoring the potential environmental and economic impact of the capsizing.
