New Australian Law Lets Employees Ignore Boss Calls and Texts After Hours

Australians can now legally ignore work calls and emails outside of regular hours, thanks to new government rules. This change has faced some criticism from business groups.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese mentioned that , "Just as people don’t get paid around the clock, they shouldn’t have to work around the clock." He also said he hoped the new rules would lead to increased productivity. “For many Australians, I think they’re getting frustrated that they’re expected to be on their phones, their emails, all of that, for 24 hours a day,” he said. “It’s a mental health issue, frankly.”

Australia has joined countries like France, Spain, and Belgium in introducing laws that protect workers from unreasonable contact outside of work hours. Other governments around the world are also looking into similar measures.

Local business groups have already raised concerns about the new laws. Andrew McKellar, CEO of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, called the changes a “thought bubble” and mentioned that businesses were not consulted about them.

Workplace Relations Minister Murray Watt said on Monday that any disputes about employers contacting workers outside of office hours can be taken to Australia's Fair Work Commission for a final decision.

Murray Watt also expressed hope that employers and employees could resolve any disputes through discussions, avoiding the need for escalation. The right to disconnect will take effect immediately for employees at medium and large enterprises, while small businesses have 12 months before the rule applies to their workers.
