After the GST Council concluded its 55th meeting, the internet went ablaze with tax levied on flavoured popcorn and the justification that the council made. Netizens, loosely calling it Popcorn Tax, feel that popcorn is a luxury, as it has more GST than gold and silver.
At the 55th GST Council Meeting chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaram, came up with the Popcorn Tax that sparked backlash on the internet. A GST of 5% on loose, un-branded popcorn, 12% on branded salt and spice popcorn and 18% over caramelised popcorn has been proposed. But, the explanation is stranger than you can think. The reason for applying tax to popcorn is because it has sugar. "When you talk outside, it looks silly...but states say that we treat products with added sugar differently, be it drinks or juice,” Nirmala Sitaraman clarified.
While the opposition has criticised this move of the GST Council and Finance Minister, the netizens are the most angry. Calling this proposed one popcorn and three different tax slabs a nuisance. Taking to X, this is how users responded to the popcorn Tax.
