At least 8 people were killed and 7 sustained injuries in a blast at an Ordnance factory in Maharashtra's Bhandara district on Friday.

"A big blast has occurred in the Ordnance Factory in Bhandara. In the incident, 8 people have died and 7 people are injured, as per preliminary information," Union minister Nitin Gadkari said.

According to PRO defence Nagpur, the rescue and medical teams are prepared for survivors and rescue is still going on.

District collector Sanjay Kolte said the explosion happened around 10:30 am in Jawahar Nagar area of the city.

"After the accident blast in Ordnance Factory Jawahar Nagar Bhandara, firefighters and ambulances have been dispatched to the spot, rescue operation is currently underway. A roof has collapsed which is being removed with the help of JCB," Kolte said.

"A total of 12 people are reported to be there, out of which 2 people have been rescued," he added.

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the incident and said that all kinds of assistance are being provided.

"There are reports that 13 to 14 workers were trapped after the roof collapsed in an ordnance factory explosion in Bhandara district. Five of them have been safely evacuated. The District Collector and Superintendent of Police are at the scene and all kinds of assistance are being provided," Fadnavis said.

"SDRF and Nagpur Municipal Corporation teams have also been called for rescue operations and they will arrive soon. The district administration is involved in rescue operations in coordination with the defence forces. Teams have also been kept ready for medical assistance," he added.
