Man Behind These Fake Bomb Threats
The delinquent, identified as Shubham Upadhyay, a 25-year-old unemployed man from Uttam Nagar, was arrested on Saturday for sending fake bomb threats to several airlines, according to some police officials from Delhi.
Last week, Mumbai cops arrested a 17-year-old boy linked to threats regarding bombs on four flights following 275 flight threats received since October 14. A senior police official said the Class 12 graduate used the social media to post threats that he would bomb flights heading to Delhi after watching TV news about such hoax.
Usha Rangnani, deputy commissioner of police said to an HT reporter, “He wanted to gain publicity and fame and used the messages as some form of joke”. This is still under further probe.” They also quoted one officer who said that after watching television reports of bomb hoaxes, Upadhyay is believed to have copied the schedule of Delhi-bound flights and pasted along with a threat saying there was a bomb on these planes.
The police said that after connecting these posts to an account owned by Shubham Upadhyay around early Saturday, they immediately filed a case under the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against Safety of Civil Aviation (SUA-SCA) Act as well as criminal intimidation under the BNS sections. Police authorities have tighten security and they have urged the public not to panic as they are investigating other cases as well.
