How a woman was saved from spending over Rs 4 Lakh on Tinder?

A 43-year-old art director from Mumbai got caught in a fraud case over Tinder, a popular dating application. The woman reportedly lost Rs 3.37 lakhs and was saved from more losses by a bank officer.

The woman came across a man named ‘Advait’ on the dating app who told her that he lived abroad and wished to visit India soon. Over time, their simple conversation started to turn into a budding relationship. Around that time, she received a call from an unidentified number who identified himself as a Custom Duty Officer at Delhi Airport. He claimed to have arrested Adwait for having a large sum of Euros. The officer demanded a fine of 3.37 lakhs to release him and asked her to send the money through UPI. In a panic, she sent the money when the officer asked for more Rs 4 Lakhs as ‘other expenses’.

Before she could send the rest of the money, the Bank Officer on Duty noticed these transactions and got suspicious. He called up the woman and informed her about the fraud, that she was trapped in and saved her from ending more than Rs Lakhs. Later, the woman filed a complaint against the fraudster at the Versova Police Station, and the police are now investigating the case. 

It is not the first time a 33-year-old woman from Malad fell victim to a similar scam. She was duped of Rs 2.45 lakh by a man who claimed to be a doctor visiting from the UK, also entangled in customs issues. Over time, frauds conducted over dating apps have increased significantly.
