Nathalie Drouin and David Morrison, deputy minister of foreign affairs, are the officials in the picture who are said to have leaked the information. During a Parliamentary Panel, both top-level officials agreed to have leaked the information to the news publications.

While explaining her action, Drouin said she didn’t need Prime Minister Trudeau’s sanction to disclose this information. She clarified that no classified information was shared with the publication. “We provided non-classified information on our actions and the evidence linking the Indian government to illegal activities targeting Canadians, including life-threatening threats,” she said.

The opposition was quick to ask why the information was first provided to a US-based publication instead of a Canadian one. “It’s investigative material we typically keep internal,” said David Morrison. He explained that the information leaked was not classified.

They also testified that they only confirmed the name of Amit Shah when a journalist from the Post approached them to confirm this news. The Post, in its reports, claims that Amit Shah and the Indian Government were involved in the killing of Sikh activist Sukhdool Singh Gill, who was assassinated on 20 September, along with the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June.

The Indian High Commissioner, termed as ‘Person of Interest’ by the Canadian Government in these assassination investigations, along with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is yet to respond to these claims.
