Amid heavy rainfall disrupting daily routines across Mumbai, an unusual incident unfolded at Churchgate railway station on Monday, causing significant disturbance to local train services. A young man, waiting on platform number 2, spotted his female friend on platform number 3, unprotected from the downpour. In a gesture to shield her from the rain, he tried to throw his raincoat to her across the platforms. However, unexpectedly, the raincoat got caught in the overhead exposed electric wires spanning the railway lines between the platforms.

The incident immediately sparked chaos as the raincoat on the wires forced a halt in train operations. Railway authorities swiftly responded by cutting off power to the affected lines to safely retrieve the raincoat, resulting in a disruption of local train services for 25 minutes. Police presence intensified at the station to manage the situation. The young man was promptly detained by railway police. However, the incident, captured on video, quickly gained attention on social media platforms.

The disruption occurred amidst already severe weather conditions in Mumbai, where heavy rainfall had caused widespread waterlogging and flight diversions across the city. On Monday, Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall that significantly disrupted daily life. Local train services between Kalyan and Thakurli stations were briefly suspended during peak hours due to the downpour. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported over 200 mm of rainfall at various automatic weather stations within 24 hours, adding to the challenges faced by the city during the monsoon season.

According to the Western Railway, local train operations resumed normally on Monday morning, although passengers noted delays ranging from 5 to 10 minutes. Central Railway's local services resumed approximately an hour later around 7:40 am, with commuters experiencing delays of 20 to 25 minutes. Heavy rainfall in Mumbai and its suburbs on Sunday led to extensive waterlogging and necessitated flight diversions. Moreover, continuous rain caused the Mithi river to overflow.
