Just a day after a powerful earthquake brought destruction and loss of life to Myanmar and Thailand, Myanmar experienced another tremor on Saturday. The 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck at 11:53:59 IST, adding to the ongoing crisis in the region.
The death toll from Myanmar’s devastating earthquake has surpassed 1,000, the junta confirmed on Saturday, with over 2,000 people injured, according to AFP. A statement from the junta’s information team reported that Friday’s powerful 7.7-magnitude quake claimed 1,002 lives and left 2,376 injured.
Mandalay, a city of 1.5 million and a significant Buddhist center, suffered extensive damage, with buildings, bridges, and roads severely impacted. Emergency crews also faced challenges in reaching monks trapped beneath the rubble at the Phaya Taung Monastery.
Meanwhile, in Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, at least nine people lost their lives when a high-rise under construction collapsed. Rescue teams are still searching the debris for survivors.
