During an exclusive discussion at the NDTV Infrashakti Awards, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways highlighted ongoing efforts, including a pioneering initiative in Nagpur. This project involves a 132-seat coach featuring airplane-style seating and a "coach attendant," powered by non-polluting energy sources. Gadkari emphasized that despite these advancements, the costs remain lower than conventional diesel buses. The government's ultimate goal, he emphasized, is for India to transition from a net energy importer to an exporter.

"The predominant issue facing our nation today is pollution—air, water, and noise—particularly critical in cities like Delhi. We urgently require domestic, cost-efficient, pollution-free transport solutions. Our strides in electric vehicles are noteworthy. Additionally, Indian Oil is set to establish 300 ethanol pumps, and automakers are introducing flexible fuel vehicles. Choosing ethanol at ₹ 60 per litre over petrol at ₹ 120 per litre, with vehicles operating 60% on electricity and 40% on ethanol, will significantly curb pollution," Gadkari explained in Hindi.

According to Mr. Gadkari, another government priority is lowering the expenses associated with public transportation. He explained that while a diesel bus costs ₹ 115 per km to operate, air-conditioned electric buses run at ₹ 41 and non-air-conditioned ones at ₹ 37 with subsidies. Without subsidies, this will now range between ₹ 50 and ₹ 60 per km, leading to a projected 15-20% reduction in ticket prices.

"We are implementing a trial initiative in Nagpur in collaboration with Tata. During my visit to the Czech Republic, I observed their articulated trolley buses, achieved by joining three buses. Our project will accommodate 132 passengers, traveling 49 km along the ring road. It will stop at a charging station after 40 km and recharge for the next 40 km in just 40 seconds. The operational cost is estimated at ₹ 35-40 per km," he explained.

"I have proposed amenities such as air conditioning, comfortable seating, and laptop space in front of each seat. Similar to airline hostesses, there will be bus attendants offering fruits, packed meals, and beverages. My calculation suggests that this bus will operate at a 30% lower cost than a diesel bus. If solar energy is utilized, costs will decrease even further," he added.

The minister also highlighted that JCB has developed construction equipment running on 50% ethanol and 50% CNG, while tractor manufacturers are working on machinery powered by ethanol, methanol, and CNG. He emphasized that these initiatives will not only reduce pollution but also significantly boost farmers' income.
