The threat of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in Tripura has raised significant concerns nationwide. A troubling report from the Tripura State AIDS Control Society (TSACS) has disclosed that 828 students have been diagnosed as HIV-positive, with 47 succumbing to the infection.
"As of now, 828 students have been identified as HIV-positive. Among them, 572 students are currently alive, while we have lost 47 individuals due to this serious infection. Many students have relocated from Tripura for higher education in prestigious institutions across the country," said a senior official from the Tripura State AIDS Control Society, as quoted by TOI. "In most instances, these children come from well-off families who have tested positive for HIV. There are households where both parents hold government positions and spare no expense in meeting their children's needs. Unfortunately, by the time they realize that their children have fallen into substance abuse, it is often too late," he added.
