Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar addressed why the assembly election schedule in Jammu and Kashmir is extending beyond the September 30 deadline set by the Supreme Court.
On Friday, Kumar explained that the end of the Amarnath Yatra on August 19 and the completion of the Lok Sabha elections on June 4 and 6, combined with adverse weather conditions, made it impossible to adhere strictly to the August 19 timeline. “We were unable to start exactly on the specified date. We haven't even had half a day of delay. However, the process has begun in a timely manner and will be completed on schedule,” Kumar stated during the press conference.
He further emphasized, “The key is not the exact date but adhering to the overall spirit of the schedule. The amendments to the J&K Reorganisation Act, which included provisions for reservations, were made in December 2023. The timeline for the Commission’s work effectively started then. Following that, we had parliamentary elections, so there has been no delay on our part.”
