The music world and fans worldwide are in mourning following the passing of legendary ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 72 in a Mumbai hospital. The iconic musician, known for his mellifluous voice that captivated audiences for over four decades, breathed his last at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of timeless melodies and soul-stirring performances.

In a statement issued by the Udhas family, they expressed profound sorrow at the loss of the Padma Shri awardee, stating, "With heavy hearts, we announce the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February due to a prolonged illness."

Today marked the funeral of the Ghazal maestro, as family, friends, and celebrities gathered to bid farewell to the legendary singer. Tabla Maestro Zakir Hussain, singer Sonu Nigam, Shaan, Shankar Mahadevan, Papon Sunil Gavaskar and actress Vidya Balan were among the prominent personalities who paid their last respects at the funeral.

Shankar Mahadevan remembered Pankaj Udhas as the "most gentle soul" and praised him for his contribution to popularizing ghazal music. Sonu Nigam was visibly emotional as he hugged Shaan, reflecting on the deep impact Udhas had on his peers and admirers.

Udhas' daughter, Reva, was inconsolable as she bid a final farewell to her father, her tears reflecting the profound loss felt by the family and the music fraternity. Pankaj Udhas' elder brother, MaManhar Udhas, also attended the funeral, offering support to the grieving family.

Reflecting on his personal life, Pankaj Udhas had previously shared insights into his love story with his wife, Farida, describing their journey as a "struggle" filled with challenges. The couple overcame societal barriers to their union, with Udhas recalling the initial resistance from their families due to their different backgrounds. Despite the hurdles, they stood by each other and eventually tied the knot on February 11, 1982.

Farida, whom Udhas described as an "independent thinker" and a "good administrator," played a significant role in his life and career. Her unwavering support and belief in their partnership were instrumental in their success and happiness.

On the other hand, his wife Faridaconveyed her steadfast belief in her husband and her deep pride in their partnership. "I want Pankaj to be my husband for seven lifetimes. Very few men appreciate the contribution of a woman in their lives. He is one of them. That has seen us through,” she said in the interview. 

Tragically, Pankaj Udhas' battle with pancreatic cancer came to light through singer Anup Jalota, who revealed that Udhas had been diagnosed with the illness and had been undergoing treatment for the past few months. Jalota expressed his sadness at Udhas' passing, highlighting the irony of a man who dedicated himself to helping cancer patients succumbing to the same disease.

Born on May 17, 1951, in Jetpur, Gujarat, Pankaj Udhas rose to prominence in the music industry with his debut ghazal album, "Aahat," released in 1980. His velvety voice and emotive renditions endeared him to audiences across the globe, establishing him as a stalwart in the world of ghazal music.

In Bollywood, Udhas left an indelible mark with his iconic rendition of "Chitthi Aayee Hai" for the film "Naam," starring Sanjay Dutt. Over the years, he released numerous albums and mesmerized audiences with his live performances, earning accolades and adulation from fans and peers alike.

Pankaj Udhas' contributions to Indian music were recognized with the prestigious Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award, a testament to his enduring legacy and influence on the country's musical landscape.

As the music world mourns the loss of one of its most beloved icons, Pankaj Udhas' legacy lives on through his timeless melodies and the countless lives he touched with his soulful music. He may have bid farewell to this world, but his music will continue to resonate in the hearts of millions, ensuring that his memory remains eternally cherished.
