Mumbai Creates Pink Speed Breakers to Raise Awareness for Breast Cancer

This October, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Nanavati Max Hospital has taken a creative step to promote early detection by painting speed breakers pink across Mumbai’s neighborhoods like Juhu, Santacruz, and Bandra (West). These bright pink speed breakers are adorned with a powerful message: “Some bumps can slow down life,” urging Mumbaikars to pause and consider regular health screenings.

The initiative leverages the visibility of pink, a global symbol for breast cancer awareness, to remind citizens of the importance of early screening in preventing serious health risks. Dr. Garvit Chitkara, Senior Consultant in Breast Surgical Oncology at Nanavati Max, highlighted the need for proactive awareness efforts, saying, “While awareness has grown, we still lack government-backed screening campaigns. Currently, many women only think about screening if they happen to see a campaign message at a clinic.”

Dr. Chitkara shared that women between 45 and 60 years are particularly at risk, though younger and older women can also be affected. He emphasized the role of regular exercise in lowering breast cancer risk, especially around menopause when waist circumference and belly fat tend to increase. “Exercising intensely for 40 minutes, five days a week, can cut your risk by half,” he noted.

The campaign also includes a “Pink Walk” on October 26, beginning at Mithibai College and ending at Juhu Beach. Participants will march in pink T-shirts, carrying placards supporting breast cancer survivors, with the event concluding in a symbolic release of pink balloons.

By utilizing public spaces like speed breakers, Nanavati Max Hospital hopes to integrate health reminders into daily life, driving home the message that early detection is key. A single screening inspired by this campaign could potentially save a life, underscoring the value of even small efforts in raising awareness.
