As per the latest update, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has put a stay on its earlier order allowing educational institutions to reopen from today onwards. In line with the stay, schools, colleges and other educational institutions falling within the jurisdiction of Mumbai Suburban areas would not open from today i.e. 16th January 2021.
The decision to reopen schools for Class 10 and 12 students in Mumbai was expected owing to the upcoming board exams that are likely to held in the months of April and May 2021.
In line with the latest relaxations being granted in the COVID related restrictions, several districts in Maharashtra have decided to reopen schools, especially for Class 9 to 12 students from 23rd November onwards.
However, schools and colleges operating in Mumbai and Thane have decided not to reopen schools owing to the high number of cases in the area. Schools in Nashik and Nagpur district also reopened on January 4 for classes 9 to 12. The schools in urban and rural areas of the district resumed on the first week of January.
To confirm the development, the BMC has released a new circular directing all schools and colleges to remain closed until further notice. The circular reads all the schools and colleges will remain shut because of the pandemic.
The decision to put stay on its earlier order allowing reopening of schools was taken by BMC due to the second wave of COVID19 in some states in the country. However, as of now no update is available for schools under consulates and embassies in Mumbai that were scheduled to reopen from January 18.
