Citing to the argument of outsider and insider in the Bollywood, actress Sushmita Sen has opened up about how her journey has been in a way different from many others. However, she believes that winning the Miss Universe title made things easier for her but to pave the way was difficult. The entire debate ignited due to the untimely demise of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
Sushmita is an actress who has always believed in her ethics which made her an exception in B-Town. Sushmita Sen points out that, “A lot of young people come from smaller cities, who live, breathe and eat cinema. They want to become actors, directors, or follow some creative pursuit here. The hunger in them is fantastic, but it often gets seen as desperation.” She feels that once people get to know about their desperation they start taking advantage of it. That is where the glitch is!
She counsels the outsiders that they should not do anything that will be seen as desperate. She also insists fresh talent has to sharpen their skills and trying and work hard. She explains it by saying “Given the competition in the industry, this desperation then becomes too much pressure. So, instead of performance, one is judged by his/her followers on social media and how many have to applaud them. It’s like if we can market it well, we can sell anything.”
“I’m an outsider but I was approached to be a part of films by default because of the beauty pageant I won. I never thought of becoming an actor, but when I took it up, I felt I can learn and grow here,” she further explained.
She further stated that she always tried to give per best performance even in the films that didn’t do well. “Maybe at that point, I wasn’t an evolved person and it showed on the screen. I take responsibility for that. I kept working hard, but was never desperate.”
She has her own ethics which she works on. “I’ve lived my life in a way where you can’t be in the same room with me and speak to me in a language which is ‘ok’ with a lot of other people. You could be the biggest filmmaker or hero, but you should show respect,” Her emphasis on this approach makes her stand apart from others in the industry.
At the work front, Sushmita is seen in a web series- “Aarya” released on June 19 on Disney+ Hotstar. The web series is helmed by Ram Madhvani where she is in lead. She made her comeback after five years.
