In a heart-wrenching incident, a teenage couple from Mathur near Madhavaram, Chennai, ended their lives in a suspected suicide pact after their parents objected to their relationship. The couple, who had recently appeared for their class 10 examinations, tied their hands together with a shawl and walked into the sea off Thiruvottiyur coast on Friday. Fishermen discovered their lifeless bodies on the same day, according to police reports.
The deceased teenagers had been in love for over two years, but their relationship faced strong opposition from their parents due to their young age and differing communities. Despite these objections, the couple continued to see each other. On Thursday afternoon, they left for Thiruvottiyur on a two-wheeler, never to return.
When the girl’s parents noticed her absence on Thursday night, they initiated a frantic search. After confirming with the boy’s parents that both teenagers were missing, the families searched friends' homes, railway stations, and bus stops but found no trace of them. Fearing the worst, they sought assistance from the police.
By the time authorities were involved, fishermen near Thangal in Thiruvottiyur had already recovered two bodies from the sea. The bodies were transported to a government hospital for post-mortem examination.
The tragic deaths of the teenagers have sparked a debate on the pressures faced by young couples in conservative societies. The incident echoes other recent tragedies where young couples have taken extreme measures due to familial and societal opposition.
Authorities are now investigating the circumstances leading up to the tragedy, while the community mourns the loss of two young lives cut short by the intense pressure to conform to social norms.
