In the threat of Bird Flu in India one more manmade threat has ruined the independence of birds in the locals.
Starting with New Year and Indian festival ‘Makar Sankranti’ people from various states have started with their ‘Kite Flying Game’ already.
But this Kite Flying has been a worried conflict for birds to stand against the sharp thread of kites popularly known as ‘Manja’ in the local language.
“Manja is a sharp string or thread made out of crushed glass pieces, metal or other sharp substances to cut the opponent’s kite string while kite-flying.” This thread not only harms the birds but it also harms animals and humans.
Fatal injuries have been reported for years due to increasing usage of Manja thread. Manja, being very sharp in nature, can slit the throat of any human or animal and is especially difficult for the birds to avoid this invisible trap while flying.
Environmentalists have been warning for decades that the Manja used as a thread for the kites are very dangerous for the flying creatures—the birds. Yet, the efforts to minimize these deathtraps on the sky have been minimal.
Ever since the nation-wide lockdown, most people have been staying indoors. To kill boredom, a lot of people have started spending their time flying kites along with children. With the rise in kite fliers, cases of birds injuries due to the sharp thread are also on the rise.
Providing a possible solution to decrease the risk of kite-flying, Dawn William, the General Manager of the Blue Cross of India said, “Police should be sensitized about this issue. Wherever they find kite-flying above their heads, they should track the person and warn them and can even penalize them for the same. Only if the police take charge in this case like 5-years ago, kite-flying can be minimized.”
