South Korean actor Song Joong-ki, celebrated for his recent TV successes in "Reborn Rich" and "Vincenzo," has taken a daring turn in his career with the noir film "Hopeless," directed by newcomer Kim Chang-hoon.

Song, who recently returned from spending nine months with his British wife and newborn son in Rome, recently sat for an interview with the Korean Herald and revealed his ongoing quest to explore diverse genres and international projects. Despite the perception that his marriage had spurred his interest in overseas work, Song clarified that he had been participating in global auditions for years, albeit with no success until now.

"I've always sought opportunities to experiment with different genres in various cultures and systems," Song stated in an interview with The Korea Herald. "My wife has been incredibly supportive, leveraging her connections in the UK and Hollywood to arrange meetings and auditions for me."

However, Song humorously admitted, "Sadly, I failed all of those previous auditions."

While Song's portfolio mainly comprises TV dramas, he expressed a strong desire to explore a wide variety of genres, with horror being a particular interest. The decision to take on "Hopeless" was lucky for Song, as he was immediately drawn to the project's rough and noir elements. He even agreed to participate in the film's production.

In "Hopeless," Song portrays Chi-gun, the right-hand man of a gang boss with a mysterious past. His character takes an interest in 18-year-old Yeon-kyu, leading to a suspenseful and ambiguous narrative that intrigues Song.

The film, which had its noncompetitive screening at the Cannes Film Festival in May, addresses significant societal issues, including family violence. Song highlighted that the film's message resonated with European audiences, reinforcing his belief in the power of cinema to address crucial topics.

Song's future project, "My Name is Loh Kiwan," on Netflix, focuses on a North Korean defector seeking refuge in Belgium and is expected to capture global attention.

Despite his newfound international success, Song is embracing fatherhood, sharing his joy at becoming a parent. With a smile, he discussed the challenge of communicating with his son, acknowledging the linguistic differences between him and his wife.

"Hopeless" is set to hit theatres on October 11, marking Song Joong-ki's venture into the gritty world of noir cinema.
