Netflix’s upcoming K-drama When Life Gives You Tangerines, starring IU and Park Bo Gum, is already making headlines—not just for its star-studded cast but also for its unconventional release strategy. The series, set on Jeju Island, will roll out over four weeks in a way that’s rarely seen on the platform.
The drama follows two contrasting characters as they experience life and change through the seasons. IU plays Ae Sun, a free-spirited woman, while Park Bo Gum takes on the role of Gwan Sik, a dependable and grounded man. Their journey unfolds over 16 episodes, structured into four seasonal chapters that reflect different phases of their lives.
Instead of dropping all episodes at once or following a standard weekly schedule, Netflix is taking a different approach. When Life Gives You Tangerines will release in four-episode batches every Friday from March 7 to March 28. This format aligns with the drama’s four-act structure, allowing viewers to engage with each chapter before moving on to the next.
Netflix executive Bae Jong Byung explained the reasoning behind this decision:
The unique release schedule complements the drama’s storytelling style, ensuring that viewers can fully immerse themselves in each season of the story before moving to the next.
Fans got their first glimpse of IU and Park Bo Gum in a newly released promotional image. The picture highlights their contrasting personalities—Park Bo Gum is dressed in casual athletic wear, while IU is seen in a more formal outfit. This visual cue hints at the dynamic between their characters and has already sparked excitement among fans.
Netflix’s production team has high hopes for the chemistry between IU and Park Bo Gum. Some representatives have even suggested that viewers might wonder why these two actors haven’t worked together before. Their collaboration, combined with the fresh release strategy, adds to the growing anticipation for the drama’s premiere.
As March 7 approaches, all eyes are on When Life Gives You Tangerines to see if this bold release strategy pays off.
