The 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended for a week following escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The decision, announced on May 9, 2025, comes in the wake of a deadly attack on Hindu tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir on April 22, which India attributes to Pakistan-based militants.

In response to the attack, India conducted airstrikes targeting locations in Pakistan, leading to retaliatory actions, including Pakistan's claim of shooting down 25 Indian drones. The escalating conflict has resulted in the closure of multiple airports in northern and western India, including Dharamsala, and the suspension of flight operations in several regions.

Amid these developments, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) relocated the IPL match between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians, originally scheduled for May 11 in Dharamsala, to Ahmedabad. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the decision was made purely due to logistical challenges arising from the closure of the Dharamsala airport.

Despite the volatile situation, Saikia assured that all IPL participants, including foreign players, feel secure and are willing to continue playing. He emphasized that the safety and security of every player, match official, and fan remain paramount, and that the BCCI has obtained clearances from all relevant authorities.

Across the border, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has postponed a Pakistan Super League (PSL) match in Rawalpindi and is considering additional schedule changes. Some English players in the PSL are reportedly re-evaluating their participation due to the unrest.

The IPL, known for its massive fan base and significant economic impact, is being held across 13 cities in India, with Kolkata hosting the opening ceremony. The playoffs were originally scheduled to be held from May 20 to 25, with matches in Hyderabad and Kolkata. However, the current suspension has cast uncertainty over the tournament's schedule.
