The highly anticipated Indian Premier League auction 2021 commences from Chennai at sharp 3 PM IST. About 291 players are bound to go under the hammer in the auction.
The first set of the auction begins on time with Karun Nair being the first player to be introduced, but the young talent went unsold. Apart from Nair, Alex Hales, Jason Roy, Evin Lewis, Aaron Finch and Hanuma Vihari also went unsold. After a slow start to the auction, the first bid took place when the Test specialist Steve Smith’s name was called out. Delhi Capitals went ahead with the bid and took Smith in their camp for 2 crore.
The first set which included batsmen wasn’t much exciting but the following set which consists of all-rounders increased the intensity at the round tables of the teams. Glenn Maxwell was the first name from the second set, the all-rounder’s base price was 2 crore, after a bidding war between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore, the right-hander finally ended in the former’s team for a whopping amount of 14.25 crore. Shakib Al Hasan was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders for 3.20 crore while Chennai Super Kings had to work hard for Moeen Ali, the all-rounder from England was bought for 7 crore. The youngster Shivam Dubey was met with a bidding war between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals, his base price was 50 Lakh but the all-rounder was hired by the latter for 4.40 crore. Chris Morris had the largest bid so far in the on-going auction, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals had a bidding war for the talented all-rounder. The former RCB player was bought by RR for a massive amount of 16.25 crore. David Malan was the last name from set 2, he was bought by Punjab Kings for a staggering price of 1.50 crore.
