Josh Hazlewood gave a big blow to Chennai Super Kings ahead of the tournament after pulling his name from IPL 2021. The 30-year-old cricketer aims to spend some time with his family and be fit for the upcoming international fixtures after IPL.
The prime Australian pacer said, “It’s been a long 10 months in bubbles and quarantine at different times, so I decided to have a rest from cricket and spend some time at home and in Australia in the next two months. We’ve got a big winter ahead too. The West Indies is going to be a long tour, with Bangladesh (T20 tour) potentially thrown on the end of that. Then potentially the T20 World Cup leading into the Ashes, so it’s a big 12 months, as it always is with Australia, and I want to give myself the best chance to be mentally and physically ready for that. That’s the decision I’ve made, and it sits pretty well with me.”
After Josh Phillippe and Mitchell Marsh, Josh Hazlewood becomes the third Australian to withdraw from the upcoming edition of the IPL. Hazlewood played three games for CSK in IPL 2020, he pocketed one wicket at an economy rate of 6.4. The Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led CSK didn’t announce the pacer’s replacement yet, let’s have a look at the three players who could replace Hazlewood in the playing XI:
- Mitchell McClenaghan
Mitchell McClenaghan has found success with Mumbai Indians in IPL before he was released ahead of the auction in 2021. The left-arm pacer has been seen playing T20 leagues across the globe and has a good experience in the same format. The pacer went unsold in the auction earlier this year, with the kind of experience and skills he posses, the pacer could replace Josh Hazlewood in the CSK line-up.
- Billy Stanlake
Billy Stanlake has played for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the past. The pacer has made a name for himself in the shortest format and he could be one of the contenders for Hazlewood’s replacement. Stanlake didn’t receive any bidders in the IPL auction 2021 with a base price of one crore. CSK might rope in Stanlake to fulfil Hazlewood’s void in the playing XI.
- Sean Abbott
The tall Australian pacer could be a suitable replacement for Josh Hazlewood in CSK. Sean Abbott has been good with the pace and bounce which could be useful for the MSD’s team in the middle overs. Abbott has been seen breaking crucial partnerships in the middle overs in the shortest format. The 29-year-old pacer went unsold in the IPL auction earlier this year.
