In the first game of the Indian Premier League, Mumbai Indians played Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. AB De Villiers’ fightback at the back end of the innings helped RCB to chase down the competitive target against MI. RCB 160/8, AB De Villiers 48, Jasprit Bumrah 2/26.
Virat Kohli (33) and Washington Sundar started the proceedings with the bat for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Kohli was putting the bad balls away while Sundar was taking his time to settle in. MI got their first breakthrough in the form of Sundar when the southpaw edged the ball to Krunal Pandya on Rahul Chahar’s bowling. Debutant Rajat Patadir also departed without contributing much with the bat in the seventh over. Glenn Maxwell (39) was the number four batsman and the all-rounder cleared his intentions with him attacking early in his innings. Maxwell started showing his antics with those switch hits and manipulated the field setting against the spinners. The RCB skipper and Maxwell’s partnership shifted the momentum towards Bangalore in quick succession. Rohit Sharma brought his ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah into the attack, and he didn’t disappoint as the pacer got rid of Kohli in the same over. AB De Villiers was the new batsman at the crease while on the other end Maxwell kept on going against the MI spinners. The debutant Marco Jansen struck twice in the 15th over when he sent Maxwell and Shahbaz Nadeem back to the pavilion. Bumrah was brought into the attack in the 17th over and this time he got the big wicket of Daniel Christian at a crucial stage and conceded just five runs. Mumbai struck thrice in the previous three overs but De Villiers kept the fight alive and smashed 15 runs off the Trent Boult over. ABD managed to get yet another big over as he gathers 15 off the 19th over. With just three needed off the last three deliveries, De Villiers pushed for two but couldn’t make his ground before Ishan Kishan dismantled the stumps. With one needed on the last delivery, Harshal Patel steals the single and takes his team home in the IPL opener.
RCB clinches the first game of the season by two wickets. Bumrah and Jansen pocketed two wickets each while Boult and Krunal Pandya grabbed one scalp each.
