India’s stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane has confirmed that Rohit Sharma will be opening the batting for Team India in the third Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
The right-handed batsman will strengthen the Indian batting line up at the top order which could be vital for the visitors in the last two matches of the bilateral series.
The star Indian batsman wasn’t picked for the limited-overs leg of India tour of Australia, as the 33-year-old cricketer picked up a hamstring injury during the IPL 2020. Although, he made a comeback and helmed his team Mumbai Indians to their fifth IPL title.
The vice-captain of the limited-overs cricket was declared fit after his examination at the NCA Bengaluru which was headed by Rahul Dravid on December 11. After completing his 14-day mandatory quarantine, Sharma joined the team for practice sessions on December 30 and is set to play the SCG Test.
Rohit Sharma was effective in the initial matches of his Test career but couldn’t cement a place in the Test squad while playing in the middle order. The Mumbaikar’s Test career was revived when he started opening the batting. He scored 556 runs in five matches at a staggering average of 92.66 as an opener in the longest format.
In the pre-match video conference, Ajinkya Rahane revealed that the limited-overs vice-captain is going to open in the third Test at SCG. It will be an exciting contest between Rohit Sharma and the Aussie seamers with the new ball.
