In the 3rd Test match of India tour of Australia, the hosts won the toss and chose to bat against the Indian team at the Sydney Cricket Ground. First innings, Australia 338/10, Steve Smith (131). First innings, India 244/10, Shubman Gill (50). Second innings, Australia 312/6 d, Cameron Green (84). Day 5, tea, second innings, India 280/5, Rishabh Pant (97), Cheteshwar Pujara (77), Rohit Sharma (51), Josh Hazlewood (2/26). The second session of day 5 was shared between the two teams as 74 runs were scored in 26 overs at the fall of two wickets. India needs 127 runs to win while Australia is in the hunt of five more wickets to clinch the third Test match.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant walked out to bat in the second session of day 5. Both the batsmen continued playing at their own rate, Pant was counter-attacking the Aussie bowlers while Pujara was solid with his defence. The two batsmen gathered 148 runs for the third wicket partnership before the southpaw fell prey to Nathan Lyon. Pant stepped out of his crease on Lyon’s lofted delivery to register his third century with a six but couldn’t middle the ball and was caught in the point region by Pat Cummins. The left-hander’s departure brought Hanuma Vihari to the crease. Pujara continued his game of defence against the Australian bowlers but he hit three consecutive boundaries to Cummins with the new ball which reflected his intention on changing the gears. The hosts finally got rid of Pujara in the 89th over when Josh Hazlewood’s delivery crashed into the batsman’s middle and off stump. Ravichandran Ashwin came to the crease at number seven.

Ashwin and Vihari were present at the crease at the tea break on day 5. In the second session of day 5, 26 overs were bowled, 74 runs were scored at the run rate of 2.85 runs per over.
