“I tend to write about things which I have seen myself or have been inspired by” – director Navjot Gulati on Jai Mummy Di
spending a decade in the Hindi film industry, Navjot Gulati will finally have a
feature as a director to his credit. In these ten years, Gulati has worked a
bit in television, made a bunch of short films and co-wrote Running Shaadi
(2013). Jai Mummy Di, his debut feature-length film, featuring Sunny Singh,
Sonnalli Seygall, Supriya Pathak and Poonam Dhillon, is releasing in theatres
“My mother has played an important role in shaping up my life and I am very close to her. I have co-written Ginny Weds Sunny which features Yami Gautam and Vikrant Massey in the lead roles. In that film also, the character of the mother takes the story forward. I guess, sub-consciously, I tend to write about things which I have seen myself or have been inspired by.”
Two years back, Navjot had made a short film called Jai Mata
Di which featured Supriya Pilgaonkar, Shiv Pandit and Shriya Pilgaonkar in
principal roles. In the short film too, which had an interesting twist towards
the end, the mother’s role was integral to the story.
“There have been several iconic ‘mother’ characters which
have been played by the likes of Nirupa Roy but in the recent past, not many
films have offered substantial parts to actresses playing the role of a mother.
I find that quite strange since mothers play an important role in the lives of
their children but are not represented adequately in films. I hope the audience
will like the way we have presented this angle in our film.”
