Alluri Sitarama Raju was one of the greatest freedom fighters hailing from the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, who fought against the British and his selfless bravery to fight for his people lifted him as a revolutionary. He was born in the year 1897 or 1898 on July 4 and today marks his 125th birth anniversary.
Marking this, remembering the most prominent personality by the Tollywood superstars who donned his role and introduced us to his selfless service to the people of his state. And if Telugu films had not presented Alluri Sitarama Raju onscreen then we would not know how rebellious he was and his contribution to the nation, in the era of the 20th Century.
Krishna Ghattamaneni in Alluri Seetarama Raju (1974)
Whenever we hear the name Alluri Sitarama Raju, the first face that comes front is of Tollywood’s superstar actor Krishna Ghattamaneni which was directed by V Ramachandra Rao, who was the initial person to introduce us to the life of the rebellion closely and went to mark a place of one of the noteworthy films that ever made in the Telugu cinema. It became the highest-grossing movie in the year 1974 which ran for 175 days in the theatres.
And the flick’s success spawned a wave of biopics of historical as well as mythological figures, usually presented as major challenges to the star actors and Krishna playing this role still stays immortal within us that can never be forgotten.
Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) in Major Chandrakanth (1993)
NTR is one of the mega performers in the Tollywood industry who can never be replaced for his contribution to the industry. Playing several mythological and historic roles he wished to play a full-fledged character of Alluri Sitarama Raju but never got a chance to do. Guess what? He still made it possible by opting for the role of him in Major Chandrakanth directed by K Raghavendra Rao for a few minutes in the famous song titled ‘Punyabhoomi Naadesam’.
Just a few minutes' glimpse of him in the shoes of Sitarama Raju left everyone stunned of him and no doubt he went on to prove his legacy of there’s no character he cannot nail.
Nandamuri Balakrishna in NTR: Kathanayakudu (2019)
Balakrishna is the younger son of NTR who did a biopic on his father’s life titled ‘NTR: Kathanayakudu’ directed by Krish Jagarlamudi. In this, the ‘god of masses’ wish became true of opting for Alluri Sitarama’s role as he replicated his father who was seen as the same in the film ‘Major Chandrakanth’ (for a song).
Balakrishna truly looked striking and convincing!
Ram Charan In RRR (2022)
In the most-latest and highest-grossing film in the year 2022, Ram Charan looked majestic and simply outstanding by donning the role of Alluri. He left everyone calling him the superstar who bought life in this historic personality after Krishna Ghattamaneni in the Telugu cinema industry.
We can proudly say Charan did total justice to the role with his rebellious performance, where Telugu people never imagined anyone in this generation of actors would give such tough competition and he truly set a mark after the veteran star Krishna.
Be it Krishna Ghattamaneni, NTR, Nandamuri Balakrishna or Ram Charan everyone was marvellous in what they played, and all were and are called superstar actors in their particular cinema eras.
Alluri Sitarama Raju was the one who started the Rampa Rebellion in 1922-24 with a band of farmers, tribal leaders and other sympathizers, who fought an armed rebellion against the British Raj in response to repressive legislation passed in 1882.
