Goa, known as India’s 'beach paradise' for its clean shores and popular tourist spots, usually sees a surge in visitors from October to December. However, this year, the state is experiencing a noticeable decline in tourism, with both industry experts and tourists reporting a sharp drop in foreign arrivals.

The drop in tourists has led to speculation that Goa may be losing its appeal and charm, as more affordable and better-developed cities in Southeast Asia are becoming popular alternatives.

Entrepreneur Ramanuj Mukherjee recently highlighted a worrying decline in foreign visitors, comparing the figures from 2019 to 2023. "Foreign tourists have abandoned the state already. Russians and Brits who used to visit annually have opted for Sri Lanka instead," he said.

He also mentioned, " Indian tourists still visiting, but soon likely to ditch it as word spreads about exploitation of tourists while there are so many cheaper comparable locations abroad."

One possible reason for the decline in Goa's tourism is the ongoing conflicts, particularly the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Palestine issues. These conflicts have led to fewer charter flights from Russia and Israel, which are key sources of foreign tourists for Goa. As a result, the state has seen a drop in international visitors from these countries.

Tourists are increasingly choosing international destinations like Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Bali, as they offer lower costs, better visa options, and improved tourism infrastructure. These competing locations have upgraded their facilities and now provide more affordable holiday packages compared to Goa.

Goa's high costs for accommodation, food, and transportation may be driving some visitors away. Many tourists are finding more affordable options elsewhere, where they can enjoy similar beaches and attractions for less. One X user pointed out that Goa needs to stop overcharging foreigners and offer reasonable prices and better experiences to attract more tourists.

Goa's infrastructure is also considered a major issue. There are no better or safer transport options, and problems like limited intra-state transportation, inconsistent beach maintenance, and lack of facilities are contributing factors. Tourists also face high charges from Goa's 'Taxi-Mafias,' who overcharge visitors. Additionally, there are no cab services available, leaving tourists with no choice but to pay the inflated prices for intercity travel.

Travelers looking for a hassle-free experience are increasingly choosing destinations that offer better services and infrastructure.
