Acclaimed director Wes Anderson is set to return to Indian cinemas with his much-anticipated film The Phoenician Scheme, which will release across the country on June 20, 2025. Originally scheduled for an earlier release, the film’s date was pushed back by two weeks, adding to the anticipation among fans of Anderson’s distinct storytelling style.

Co-written by Anderson and frequent collaborator Roman Coppola, The Phoenician Scheme is a darkly humorous espionage drama centered around a strained father-daughter relationship. The story follows Zsa-Zsa Korda, a flamboyant European tycoon played by Benicio del Toro, whose mysterious global dealings come under scrutiny when his daughter, Sister Liesl—a nun portrayed by rising star Mia Threapleton—returns to confront the family’s legacy.

True to Anderson’s style, the film features a vibrant ensemble cast including Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Benedict Cumberbatch, Bill Murray, Riz Ahmed, Michael Cera, Bryan Cranston, and Willem Dafoe. Set in a fictional 1950s nation called Modern Greater Independent Phoenicia, the narrative weaves satire, suspense, and stylized aesthetics into a meticulously crafted cinematic world.

The Phoenician Scheme had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2025, receiving critical acclaim for its blend of visual grandeur and emotional depth. Critics have noted that while the film maintains Anderson’s signature symmetry and color palette, it also ventures into more psychological and morally ambiguous territory.

With its mix of eccentric characters, political intrigue, and emotional complexity, The Phoenician Scheme is expected to resonate with both longtime Anderson fans and newcomers to his work. As Indian audiences prepare for its release, the film stands poised to offer a fresh yet familiar experience—equal parts whimsical and profound.
