Amavsya is considered as the most important day among the five days of Diwali. Laxmi Puja is performed to worship Goddess Laxmi.

The most auspicious time to perform Laxmi Puja is considered to be after sunset which is called Pradosh. The Amavsya tithi is most important during the Diwali Puja. Hence the day of Diwali Puja is decided on the combination of Amavasya and Pradosh.

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, traditionally falls on the Amavasya (new moon) Tithi of the Kartik month. In 2024, this Tithi starts at 3:52 PM on October 31 and ends at 6:16 PM on November 1. According to the Drik Panchang, Diwali should be celebrated on October 31 as the Amavasya night occurs on that day. The auspicious time for Laxmi Puja falls between 5:12 PM and 7:43 PM, as per several reports.
