Saudi Arabia made history on Friday by hosting its inaugural fashion show featuring swimsuit models, signaling a remarkable departure from its conservative traditions. Less than a decade ago, women were required to wear body-covering abaya robes, but the poolside event at the St. Regis Red Sea Resort marked a significant shift in the kingdom's approach to fashion and social norms.
The show, part of the inaugural Red Sea Fashion Week, showcased the collection of Moroccan designer Yasmina Qanzal, featuring predominantly one-piece swimsuits in hues of red, beige, and blue. Many models flaunted exposed shoulders, with some even displaying partially visible midriffs, representing a departure from the traditional modesty associated with Saudi attire.
Speaking to AFP, designer Yasmina Qanzal expressed her pride in being part of this historic moment, stating, “It's true that this country is very conservative but we tried to show elegant swimsuits which represent the Arab world." She emphasized the significance of the event as a milestone for Saudi fashion.
The fashion show took place at the St. Regis Red Sea Resort, located off Saudi Arabia's western coast, as part of the ambitious Red Sea Global project, a cornerstone of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 initiative. This program aims to diversify the Saudi economy and promote social reforms, including advancements in the fashion and tourism sectors.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has spearheaded various social reforms since assuming his position in 2017, seeking to modernize Saudi Arabia and shed its austere image. These reforms have included the reintroduction of cinemas, mixed-gender music festivals, and now, groundbreaking fashion events like the Red Sea Fashion Week.
Despite these progressive changes, Saudi Arabia's efforts to open up to the world have been met with criticism over increased repression of dissent. Nevertheless, attendees like Syrian fashion influencer Shouq Mohammed see the fashion show as a testament to the kingdom's aspirations for growth and diversification.
According to a report by the official Saudi Fashion Commission, the fashion industry contributed significantly to the kingdom's economy in 2022, underscoring its potential as a driver of economic growth and employment opportunities. As Saudi Arabia continues its journey towards modernization, events like the Red Sea Fashion Week are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping its cultural landscape and global image.
