Last weekend, Kapil Sharma hosted the team of Baby John, including Director Kalees, writer and co-producer Atlee, and lead actors Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh and Wamiqa Gabbi. While the entire episode was one of the best that came out of Netflix’s The Great Indian Kapil Sharma Show. However, the episode had a particular segment that started this whole controversy.

The segment was shared by a user, where Kapil asked Atlee, “Atlee sir you are so young, and aap itne bade producer-director ban gaye hain. Kabhi aapke saath aisa hua hai ki kabhi aap kisi star se milne gaye first time, aur usko laga hi naa ho ki aap Atlee ho. Usne kaha ‘where is Atlee?’” The user penned the caption, “Kapil Sharma subtly insults Atlee's looks? Atlee responds like a boss: Don't judge by appearance, judge by the heart.”

While the tweet was enough to ignite the fire of trolling, Kapil’s response to it made it worse. He retweeted the post, saying, “Dear sir, can you pls explain to me where n when I talked about looks in this video? Pls don’t spread hate on social media 🙏 thank you. (guys watch n decide by yourself, don’t follow anybody’s tweet like a sheep).” Since then, the internet has become divided, as one half is calling Kapil’s remarks during the show racist, and the other half stands guard, trying to justify Kapil’s words.

One user said, “It was just the typical Kapil Sharma dialogue, he wasn't insulting him at all!” Another user criticised his action, “Kapil's "humour" is taking personal potshots at anyone in the audience or not very high profile guests. Not funny.” One user said, “He didn't insult Atlee's look. He said that he is very young and that he doesn't look like a 'typical director',” defending Kapil Sharma, others attacked him saying, “ He thinks being fair is the right measure for wisdom and success.”

At the end of the day, what is said is said, and Atlee answered him well. While the internet fights over what the question meant, it’s no lie that Kapil Sharma has heavily relied on body shaming and racist and sexist jokes for years.
