Kali Chaudas: Win Of Good Over Evil

Kali Chaudas is a Hindu festival celebrated the day before Diwali to honor Goddess Kali. This year, it falls on Wednesday, October 30, 2024. Devotees pray to Kali for strength, courage, and protection from evil. Worshipping her is believed to keep harmful forces away. Also called Narak Chaturdashi or Roop Chaudas, Kali Chaudas usually takes place three days before Bhai Dooj and six days before Labh Pancham, two other Diwali festivals.

Seeking Blessings of Goddess Kali on Kali Chaudas:

On Kali Chaudas, people worship Goddess Parvati in her powerful form as  Kali. Praying to Kali on this day is believed to bring many blessings, like protection from Shani dosh , happiness in marriage, improved health, wealth, and protection from evil forces. Goddess Kali is the main deity worshipped on Narak Chaturdashi. Known as the fierce side of Goddess Shakti, she destroys negative energies and evil. Her blessings bring protection from harmful forces and victory over enemies, offering safety and renewal for her devotees.

The other side of Kali Chaudas:

Kali Chaudas, on the 14th day of the dark fortnight, is an important day for those interested in mystical and spiritual practices. Also called Narak Nivaran Chaturdashi, it’s when Tantriks and Aghoris perform special rituals. This day is considered powerful for protecting against negative energies and evil spirits, making it a time for spiritual cleansing.

The Defeat of Narakasura:

Narakasura was a powerful demon who caused trouble on earth and in the heavens. Even Indra, the king of gods, couldn’t stop him and had to escape. The gods asked Lord Vishnu for help, and he promised that, as Krishna, he would defeat Narakasura. On Narak Chaturdashi (or Roop Chaudas), Krishna fought and killed the demon, bringing peace back to the heavens and earth.

The Importance of Abhyang Snan on Kali Chaudas:

Diwali lasts for five days, starting with Dhanteras and ending with Bhai Dooj. During this time, a special bath called Abhyang Snan is taken on three days: Chaturdashi, Amavasya, and Pratipada. The most important Abhyang Snan is on Narak Chaturdashi (Kali Chaudas) because it’s believed to protect people from negative energy and even avoid hell. Traditionally, sesame oil is used for this bath.

Do’s and Don’ts for Narak Chaturdashi (Kali Chaudas Puja):

Do’s:

1. Offer prasad of sesame seeds, laddoos, and rice mixed with ghee and sugar.

2. Sing songs and chants dedicated to Goddess Kali throughout the day, especially during the special muhurat time.

3. While bathing, wash your head and apply kajal (eyeliner) to your eyes to keep away negative energies and evil spirits.

Don’ts:

Avoid stepping on or crossing any pots covered with red cloth, fruits, or black dolls at crossroads.
