But, how many of us have truly understood the art of this concept, that’s highly complex yet most practiced in today’s mainstream world. We are continuously moving towards amalgamation of diverse cultures from pop, drag to divinity of the Sun king into mainstream art, inspiring a breaking of stereotypes simultaneously.

Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute, had framed the exhibition’s theme for 2019 around Susan Sontag’s seminal 1964 essay Notes on “Camp”, which posed several different ways in which the concept could be construed, as per reports in Vogue.

As constructively articulated by Sontag’s writings — she argued that camp is the “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration… style at the expense of content… the triumph of the epicene style” — fitting quite aptly with our cultural and political forwardness.

More so, it was further detailed by Susan Sontag stating “Camp taste has an affinity for certain arts rather than others. Clothes, furniture, all the elements of visual décor, for instance, make up a large part of camp.” In simpler words, Camp, as Andrew Bolton noted, “has become increasingly more mainstream in its pluralities — political camp, queer camp, pop camp, the conflation of high and low, the idea that there is no such thing as originality.”

Now, these are artistic approaches to this vast theme that’s based on poetic, dramatic posture, flair in costumes that combine or imbibe diverse cultural influences. Simply, the unique ability of combining high art and pop culture.

The Met Gala of 2019, based on camp, took their inspo from embracing elements like irony, humour, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality, excess, extravagance, nostalgia, and exaggeration. Well, take a look at Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas adding drama to the gala. On the other hand, Deepika Padukone creating a subtle fairy tale look from Barbie World.

Some took artistic inspiration from their childhoods’ fairytales like Lily Singh as Rapunzel, or Zendaya giving us a live reiteration of Cinderella’s transformation in her lighting Tommy Hilfiger gown and, on the other hand the Jenner sisters imbibed the theme in the perfect way though a ‘cabaret’ form of dress-up!

Take a look at Rachel Brosnahan, who wore an Erdem dress that was symbolised an acidic tribute to cross-dressing and Italian aristocracy.  Combining around 510,000 sequins in a Michael Kors outfit, Emily Blunt turned heads to her glittering aura. Just like Emily Blunt, we saw many celebs glittering in metallic tastes!

Taking note of American Vogue editor Anna Wintour’s explaination of Camp at a press conference in February, “Basically, we go from sun kings to drag queens,” well, the fashionable men at this prestigious gala definitely broke stereotypes all over!

From Lena Waithe paying a tribute to the pioneers of camp as she wore a jacket with the words “Black Drag Queens Invented Camp” on the back; to Ezra Miller’s illusionary artistic make-up adding to his own flair of ‘Camp’!

Co-chairing, Harry Styles set the temperature high as he stepped out in sheer frilled black blouse and tailored trousers by Gucci, taking a mix inspo from Victorian Age style and New Romantic Movement. On the other hand, something extravagant was Jeremy Scott – “the king of camp” creating a work of art out of Tracee Ellis Ross. While Billy Porter wasn’t left behind on dramatic entrance and a flair of gold- wearing a gold winged bodysuit and 24-karat headpiece, while being carried on a litter. Totally ancient and romanian!

Jared Leto got us all bugged eyed as the actor carried an uncanny lifelike copy of his own head with him through the red carpet as complimentary to his high-neck gown designed by Alessandro Michele. However, the whole theatrical vibration was set forth by Lady Gaga, as she representated ‘Camp’ through the flamboyant change of 4 outfits on the red carpet itself, accompanied by umbrella-wielding dancers!

Let’s not forget, how beautifully the pop culture came through just the same in this vast theme, by Kristen Stewart and more. On that note, we loved Celine Dion‘s second appearance on the gala, as she camped it all out in Oscar de la Renta designed beaded, vampy gown inspired from Judy Garland’s role essaying a vaudeville performer in the 1941 film Ziegfield Girl.

Hence, this theme definitely contradicts and sets a pace into a very diverse and dynamic theme in the fashion industry, making it the best possible theme for the prestigious Met Gala.
