This century-old festival is linked to multiple tales, each changing from region to region. Brij, the home of Lord Krishna, believes that on this night, Lord Krishna performed a divine dance with the Gopis of Vrindavan, the dance of Love, Raas Leela, hence the name Raas Purnima.

Some people believe that tonight, Goddess Laxmi descends to earth to watch the humans and bless her devotees with wealth. Others believe that tonight's moon is bathed in 16 Kalas, the divine quality of Lord Krishna. It is believed that looking at this full moon can heal a person.

The moonlight is considered a nectar that, when consumed, can cleanse you physically and spiritually. In the cleansing ritual, devotees prepare Kheer, which is kept under the moonlight to absorb the healing powers of the moon.

People also fast and perform Satyanarayan Puja, praying to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi for their blessing for the upcoming year.
