Legendary Pakistani fast bowler and former captain Wasim Akram has given his reasons for not wanting to be the head coach or selector for the men's cricket team. Despite being one of the best bowlers of all time, Akram has never been the Pakistani team's coach. In response to a fan question on Ten Sports Pakistan's The Dressing Room show, Akram stated that he has never thought about becoming the head coach or chief selector of the Pakistan men's cricket team because he cannot stand the disrespectful treatment from the supporters that his former teammates, including Waqar Younis, have endured while they were head coaches.

Sincerely, many people still occasionally criticize me or try to make fun of me, saying things like "khud kuch karta nahi hai" or "ki gallan (baatein) kara lo isse." Akram remarked, "When I see Pakistani coaches, like Waqar (Younis), who has been a coach a few times, I can't stand it when I see fans mistreating the coaches. Aap log badtmeezi karte hai coaches toh vo badtmeezi mere se bardasht nahi hogi."

"I want to help the Pakistan cricket team and I'm available for free even if and when needed," said the first spinner to take 500 wickets in ODIs. "I wish to support Pakistani cricket." For what reason must you pay me? I am available without charge. I'll be at your camp whenever you call. I will interact with players if you invite me to participate in any tournament.

However, my age is 58. I have a 10-year-old daughter and a family. My two boys are boys. Time with them is what I want to do. However, like I mentioned, whenever I have the time, I'm always willing to help out at the camp, even if it means giving away my services. Mai chala jaunga, aa raha hai Pakistan team ka koi tournament, unka camp lagta hai, I'll be there. Hoon magar mai aise beizzati nahi kara sakta iss umar mein ei mai kar sakta hoon. As badtmeez toh hum hai (I can do that, but I can't be humiliated like that), benzati toh waise he bahut karte ho. We are impolite, therefore you're already making me feel embarrassed at this age," he continued.
