On August 23, 2024 (KST), the Busan International Film Festival revealed plans to honor the late actor Lee Sun Kyun with a special screening titled “Beautiful Person, Lee Sun Kyun” and the prestigious Korea Cinema Award. However, the decision to honor Lee has sparked backlash, particularly over the title “Beautiful Person,” given the circumstances surrounding his death. Lee Sun Kyun, who was under investigation for alleged drug use and marital infidelity, tragically took his own life, leading some to question the appropriateness of the tribute.

While some supporters believe Lee’s impact on Korean cinema warrants recognition, others argue that the festival’s decision is insensitive. The controversy highlights ongoing tensions in Korea regarding how public figures are treated in the face of scandal.

Rebecca Sun of The Hollywood Reporter commented on the cultural context, noting that Korea’s high suicide rate and the intense scrutiny faced by public figures may have contributed to Lee’s tragic decision.
