Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior
Tanhaji The Unsung Warrior tells the story of Tanhaji Malusare who was a military leader in the Maratha Empire and has fought alongside Maratha leader Shivaji Maharaj in various battles throughout the years. Tanhaji Malusare is popular for his role in the Battle of Sinhagad and is played by Ajay Devgn. Tanhaji The Unsung Warrior is being directed by Om Raut, who earlier made the the Marathi film Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush (2015) and will have Saif Ali Khan, Kajol and Pankaj Tripathi in the pivotal roles
While the trailer of Tanhaji (touched 54 million views), had generated curiosity among the audience as it is coming at the right time. The reviews of the historical drama has been encouraging which has led the morning show opening between 25-50% range across India. Due to excellent user reviews from the audience as per BookMyShow, the collections picked up in the evening and night shows, bringing somewhere between Rs 16.75-17 crore and will beat Ajay Devgn’s third highest opening day film Total Dhamaal (Rs 16.50 crore) released last year. Though the competition from Chhapaak will be there, Tanhaji can get a solid boost on Saturday. The budget of Tanhaji is Rs 125 crore (Production Cost: 110 Crore and Prints & Advertising Cost: 15 Crore) and has been released in 3880 screens across India
Chhapaak was already in the news thanks to stint performed by Deepika Padukone at JNU which has created huge controversy around the film. Nevertheless, the controversy did not benefit the film that much as the film opened below expectation.
Deepika Padukone is a huge star who scored her biggest hit with her last film Padmaavat (Rs 300.10 crores). The actress is coming after 2 years and has been in limelight ever since thanks to her marriage, brand endorsement. The trailer of Chhapaak had already created curiosity among the audience (43 million views) and thanks to the unnecessary controversy, the publicity is already created. Chhapaak received positive reviews as per BookMyShow.com which has led to the morning show occupancy report somewhere between 10-15%.
However, the social-drama did not pick up in the evening and night shows as expected and collected somewhere between Rs 5-6 crore which is below expectations considering the controversy, star power of Deepika Padukone who is collaborating with Meghna Gulzar (Filhaal, Talwar and Raazi) for the first time. The collections is expected to grow on Saturday as it is an urban film and should work in the multiplexes.
The budget of Chhapaak is Rs 45 crore ( Production Cost: 35 Crore , Prints & Advertising Cost: 10 Crore) and has been released in 1700 screens across India.
