Sports is an important part of life which lifts you up when you are broken and motivates you to bring the best out of you. Hansal Mehta’s Chhalaang is an inspiring sports drama that helps you realize your potential.
Chhalaang tells the story of a care-free sports teacher Montu (Rajkummar Rao) who takes his job for granted. Montu falls for the new computer teacher Neelima Mehra (Nushrratt Bharuccha) and everything goes well until Mr. Singh (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub) enters the scene and takes the responsibility of a dutiful PT teacher. Threatened from Mr. Singh, Montu challenges him for a sport competition and builds his own team to earn the love and respect.

Directed by Hansal Mehta, who previously helmed the brilliant web-series Scam 1992 and solid flicks like Shahid, Omerta, Aligarh etc., collaborates with Luv Ranjan. Aseem Arrora and Zeishan Quadri who wrote the story. The result is fruitful as right from the beginning of the film, you will be completely engrossed into the beautiful tale of sports teacher and his struggle to realize his potential. Blended with sarcasm and light moments, the film is a powerful drama which will help you sail it through 2 hours 16 minutes without getting bored. Told in a subtle manner, it is the simplicity of narration which is the highlight of the film and you will cherish each and every frame. There are no glossy sets, colorful costumes over-the-tone melodrama yet the film is entertaining and will keep you glued throughout.
While Chhalaang scores brownie points in few parts, it does suffer from the screenplay which could have tighter in few places. The transformation of Rajkummar Rao into a dutiful sports teacher and his practice sessions with newly formed team could have been better executed. The saving grace was the engaging climax match which will keep you on your toes.
Technically, cinematography and art direction were brilliant while editing was fine. Chhalaang rides on the shoulder of one of the best actor of our time – Rajkummar Rao. The brilliant actor just gave a wonderful performance in Ludo and now wears another feather on the cap with captivating performance in Chhalaang. Mohammed Zeeshan Aayub does well in the supporting role while Nushrratt Bharuccha transforms herself with Haryanvi accent. I liked Saurabh Shukla, Ila Arun and Satish Kaushik in the supporting character.
Overall, Chhalaang is a feel-good cinema with a strong and captivating message. Good 3.5/5
