North Korea's Allegations: BTS and BLACKPINK Treated Like Slaves Ignite Social Media Storm

Amidst South Korea's Seollal celebrations, an old report resurfaced from a North Korean media outlet, sparking a frenzy on social media on February 10. Originally released in 2021, the report criticised the treatment of South Korean idol groups, notably BTS and BLACKPINK, shedding light on alleged harsh conditions enforced by prominent entertainment companies.

Netizens ridiculed the claims made by the North Korean media, particularly a paragraph stating BTS and BLACKPINK were treated like slaves. The resurfaced report, shared on The Qooforum, garnered attention for its accusations of abuse and exploitation within the K-pop industry.

Arirang Meahri, the North Korean media outlet, highlighted the extensive training regimens imposed on young idols, alleging they were kept isolated from the outside world and subjected to gruelling schedules, with minimal sleep and limited earnings.

The article also referenced Western media reports, including mentions of BTS's rigorous training, contributing to their global success. However, Korean internet users found the claims incredulous, with some even jokingly expressing a desire to be "a slave with 10 billion of won."

Supporters and analysts questioned the credibility of Arirang Meahri's claims, noting the immense success and achievements of BTS and BLACKPINK. Many emphasised the inappropriateness of such allegations in light of the groups' accomplishments, further fuelling the social media discourse.
