Indian movie industry saw a major setback in the last couple of years. Many reasons for that could be considered for this like the lockdown situation, the rise in OTT platforms, web series nabbing a huge audience, improved access to foreign movies, and so on and so forth. But this year saw an increase in the number of theatre-going folks as things were back to normal and so was the box office. We saw many movies faring well at the box office and even movies that weren’t appreciated by critics much, had a profitable year. Let’s have a look at some of the highest-grossing Indian movies of 2023:

1. Pathaan (Release Date: January 25)

This year proved to be good for Shah Rukh Khan in terms of movies. His recent films had an underwhelming box office collection but seems like King Khan is back in his form. The movie had a box office collection of INR 1050.05 crore! It’s basically a 1000-crore club movie now. This action-packed film also stars Deepika Padukone and John Abraham in lead roles.

2. Ponniyin Selvan: II (Release Date: April 28)

One of the most anticipated movies, Ponniyin Selvan: II, a Tamil language movie, was well received by the audience. The historical action film was much awaited by the audiences and stars Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Jayaram and R. Sarathkumar in lead roles. It had a good box office collection and amassed INR 344.63 crore.

3. The Kerala Story (Release Date: May 5) 

One of the most anticipated movies was The Kerala Story because of its plotline. The movie threw light on the issue of conversion and trafficking of Hindu women in Kerala. Many compared this movie to The Kashmir Files for showing raw truth. Starring Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, and Sonia Balani, this movie had a box office collection of INR 302 crore despite being banned in many places.

4. Varisu (Release Date: January 11)

Tamil movies with a big ensemble of great actors and a family entertainer always perform well at the box office. Varisu, an action drama movie followed the same route by having a gross collection of INR 297.55 crore. It stars Vijay, Rashmika Mandanna, R.Sarathkumar, Jayasudha, Prakash Raj, Nandini Rai, Prabhu, and Shaam among many others in lead roles.

5. Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani (Release Date: July 28)

The newest addition to this year’s 100-crore club was Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. A proper Dharma film with emotions, romance, drama, comedy, songs and dance sequences and most importantly, family, this movie till date has a worldwide gross collection of INR 231.9 crore. It stars Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Shabana Azmi, Dharmendra and Jaya Bachchan in lead roles. The movie is still screening in movie theatres, maybe we will get to see higher numbers.

6. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar (Release Date: March 8)

 This coming-of-age romantic comedy movie had a good reception and was liked by audiences. Especially the song sequences in the movie were popular. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar stars Ranbir Kapoor. Shraddha Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia and Anubhav Singh Bassi in major roles. With a worldwide collection of INR 223 crore, this movie was pretty good.

7. Thunivu (Release Date: January 11)

 A good year for Tamil cinema as Thunivu also entered the 100-crore club. This action-heist movie was a commercial success and had a box office collection of INR 220 crore. Thunivu stars Ajith Kumar in the lead role with an ensemble of supporting actors like Manju Warrior, Ajay, Veera, and Samuthirakani.

8. Gadar 2

The Gadar sequel did unthinkable at the box office. It would have been a surprise hit even after crossing 100 crores in India, but the actual run left everyone spellbound. No one in their wildest dream imagined the film earning above 500 crores and emerging as an industry hit. All thanks to the nostalgia factor and Sunny’s magic as Tara Singh.

9. Jailer

This film was released worldwide on August 10. After running successfully in theatres for more than a month, it grossed over ₹650 crore worldwide, tweeted film trade analyst Manobala Vijayabalan on Wednesday. Moreover, the action film has collected more than ₹343 crore nett in India in all languages, as per a report by Sacnilk.com.
