No one saw it coming but when it came, it created a storm which was devastating both mentally and economically for Bollywood films. Not only the releases but even the shooting of Bollywood films were stalled as the spread of COVID-19 virus is slowing down thanks to the vaccination drive going well across the country. As the situation is getting normal, the film fraternity have announced slate of releases for this year. However, there is catch..
With sky-rocketing ticket prices coupled with highly expensive food at the movie theaters, the audience have become very particular about choosing the right film for their entertainment. They need a film which should be worth the price spent on food and tickets. This is where the movie reviews and word-of-mouth response comes into play. Last year, OTT had played a major role where the content mattered over the quality of cinema. In earlier days, audience would blindly watch a film featuring big shot stars but the quality of cinema is changing and the film with strong content is definitely taking over the star power. Obviously, the film with superstars ensures a grand opening but it is definitely the content which is king allowing the film to sail smooth for good amount of time at the box office.
Let us check out the box office clashes of 2021 which will decided whether the audience will be lured by the content of the film rather than a superstar featuring in it :-
1. Radhe Vs Satyameva Jayate 2 – EID
Salman Khan is no doubt one of most commercial superstar of Bollywood industry. His name brings audience to the theaters despite the controversies surrounding him or negative reviews his films gathers. Radhe has been in making for quite sometime and Salman Khan’s collaboration with Prabhu Deva after the success of Wanted, makes it one of of popular releases. Salman Khan also has luck favoring him during the EID festival and his fans will definitely ensure Radhe becomes his one of biggest opening film of his career.
On the other hand, John Abraham has made his name with action potboilers like Satyameva Jayate, Force, Rocky Handsome and Batla House. Definitely, he will face clash with Salman Khan’s Radhe but he has own dedicated fan followers who will ensure that Satyameva Jayate 2 will benefit from the EID festival.
2. Bell Bottom Vs Fast Furious 9 – 28th May
Like Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar has made a huge difference to his box office career. Probably, one of most hard working actor of our time, Akshay Kumar has created own set of fans who adore him. Directed by Ranjit M. Tewari and written by Aseem Arrora and Parveez Shaikh, Bell Bottom is expected bring more heat in summer but the latest Fast & Furious franchise has got even more bigger and better with F9 which will definitely impact the box office collection of Akshay Kumar starrer as both belong to same genre. The key to success for Akshay Kumar starrer will be content which should satisfy the audience.
3. ’83 Vs The Conjuring 3 – 4th June
The release dates of Ranveer Singh and director Kabir Khan’s highly anticipated sports drama ’83, which was supposed to release on 10th April, 2020 , has been finally announced. The true story of Indian cricket won the world cup trophy in 1983 will finally be witnessed on 4th June 2021. However, it will face the latest release from the universe of The Conjuring – Conjuring 3, which itself is highly anticipated. The good thing about this clash is that both films belong to different genre and should impact each other’s business at the ticket window.
4. Shershaah Vs Major Vs Top Gun – 2nd July
Both films are based on life of brave soldiers who have laid down their life for their motherland. While Shershaah talks about the contribution of Vikram Batra in the Kargil war, Major gives an insight into the life of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who martyred in the tragic Mumbai attacks of 26/11. Though the story and life of Vikram Batra and Sandeep Unnikrishnan should be told and celebrated, the decision of releasing both biopic drama on the same day might eat into each other’s business at the ticket window.
This will be an interesting clash at the box office as I think this is probably the first time we are seeing two biopics releasing on the same day. Also, releasing on the same is Tom Cruise much awaited Top Gun 2 which will definitely give some tough competition to both biopic drama.
5. Attack Vs Pushpa – 15th August
John Abraham has been a consistent performer at the Independence Day with Batla House and Satyameva Jayate inspite of his films clashing with Mission Mangal and Gold. Attack, slated to release during Independence Day this year will be facing Allu Arjun starrer Pushpa but should not face much heat due to his solid fan following and the theme of Attack which should find the audience.
6. RRR Vs Maidaan – Dusshera
Another interesting clash where we will see Ajay Devgn Vs Ajay Devgn at the box office for the first time. After super success of Bahubali franchise, S.S Rajamouli brings Ram Charan, Jr. NTR, Ajay Devgn and Alia Bhatt starrer RRR to the audience on Dusshera festival. On the same day, another film of Ajay Devgn starrer Maidaan will be hitting the theaters which is a biopic and will have Tanhaji actor in the lead role. No doubt, RRR will open on a humongous scale but Maidaan will also give a tough fight in the Hindi belt thanks to the growing popularity of Ajay Devgn who has established himself a versatile actor impressing both audience and critics.
7. Prithviraj Vs Jersey – Diwali
In 2019, Akshay Kumar won the box office crown with Housefull 4 inspite of facing Saand Ki Aankh and Made In China at the same time. This time he will be facing more tough opponent as his biopic on Prithviraj Chauhan will take on Shahid Kapoor’s sports drama, Jersey, which has done very well in Telugu language. While the historical data says that Diwali has worked out very well for most of the clashes and with these two superstar’s amazing fan following and previous box office hits (Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh and Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 4), it will be a boon for both Jersey and Prithviraj.
