In a celebration of the pivotal role radio plays in advocating for child rights, UNICEF India, in collaboration with Bollywood actor and UNICEF India National Ambassador Ayushmann Khurrana, honoured 22 outstanding radio professionals from across the nation with the prestigious Radio4Child Awards.

The fifth edition of the UNICEF India Radio4Child Awards, held recently, commended the exceptional efforts of radio broadcasters from various platforms including All India Radio, private FM stations, and community radio. These professionals were lauded for their remarkable work in raising awareness on crucial issues such as routine immunization, climate change, and child protection.

The ceremony, graced by renowned actor Ayushmann Khurrana, emphasized three key themes impacting children's rights. Khurrana, who began his career as a radio jockey, expressed his deep commitment to child rights, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe and nurturing environment for children to thrive. He commended the radio professionals for their role as storytellers, educators, and change-makers, highlighting the profound impact of radio in disseminating vital messages to millions of listeners.

The Radio4Child Awards 2024 received an overwhelming response, with 165 entries submitted by 59 radio professionals from 20 states across India. This reflects a collective effort to leverage the power of radio to amplify messages that positively influence children's lives. The Radio4Child initiative, a dynamic public-private partnership, aims to enhance awareness and understanding of child rights among radio professionals nationwide.

Zafrin Chowdhury, Chief of Communications, Advocacy, and Partnerships at UNICEF India, commended the partnership with Radio4Child and praised the dedication of radio professionals in championing child rights. She highlighted radio's enduring popularity and its role as a trusted source of information and entertainment, underscoring the importance of leveraging this medium to address critical issues affecting children.

The evaluation of entries was conducted by a distinguished jury comprising former radio professionals from All India Radio, representatives from the Association of Radio Operators for India (AROI), senior members from civil society, UNICEF NGO partners, and columnists. Entries were assessed based on criteria such as innovation, emotional impact, and messaging effectiveness.

In addition to the awards ceremony, over 60 radio professionals participated in a comprehensive capacity development workshop focused on Inclusive Early Childhood Development, Climate Change, and Child Protection. This underscores the commitment to fostering innovation in radio programming aimed at addressing children's issues and driving positive change.

As UNICEF marks its 75th anniversary in India, the organization remains dedicated to harnessing the power of radio to advocate for every child's right to a better and brighter future. The Radio4Child Awards serve as a testament to the collective efforts of radio professionals in advancing the cause of child rights across the nation.
