After spending decades in the entertainment industry and holding a ministerial position in the Government of West Bengal, Mithun Chakraborty has spoken out about racist comments he received about his skin complexion when he first started. He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the 70th National Film Awards held at Vigingn Bhaven on Tuesday. Presented this year by President Droupadi Murmu, the honour recognises the legacy artistes and contributors in the film fraternity.

While accepting his award, Mithun told some stories from his struggling days. Actor once mentioned that many people had informed him that dark-skinned actors will not survive in Bollywood. I said to God ‘Would you mind changing my colour?’ I could, however, never change my mind about my skin colour and there came a time that I could not accept the fact that my skin could not change. Thus I kept on practicing my dancing skills so hard that regardless of my skin color I would stand out. That is how I became the ‘sexy, dusky Bengali babu ‘.

Mithun was also willing to describe his experiences in the ups and downs of the industry especially after getting his first National Award. Actually, I thought that I had turned into Al Pacino. Finally, I got to the point where I was disdainful of producers. Reality check came in when a producer chased me out of his office. This moment for him was the time when he woke up from dreams saying, “That day, I knew I was not Al Pacino.” Before receiving this award, I often murmured abuses to God for my sufferings but after receiving this award I feel at peace and will not complaint again.
