Shah Rukh Khan's late National Award Ignites Strong Opinion
When I am writing this post by then the world knows that yesterday a super incident has happened that the icon of he Hindi film industry and the Badshah of Bollywood has won his first ever national award as best actor shared with Vikrant Massey. Not going into details as by this time everybody knows everything because the name is none other than all of our favourite SRK - Shah Rukh Khan.
I was just looking to the people's reaction yesterday. I was amazed and rightfully so that most of them were asking " we are very happy but why so late ?"
Even for me I got the same reaction and today I am not in a mood to submerge this feeling by saying " Better late than never " and pass it but wanted to analyse the reason .... why so late ?
Before coming to the main subject I just want to share you what Vikrant Massey has told yesterday. He mentioned that his childhood dream has come true to share the honour with his icon SRK .
For my profession I am fortunate enough to interact with Vikrant several times and I know he speaks his mind. And it is not only Vikrant most of the young brigades who are established actors today posses the same feelings about SRK . He is their idol, icon and the man to follow.
Several years before when SRK was asked about national awards he humbly told that he and probably his kind of films are not worth for it . This was the expected statement from a person like him because I know how down to earth person he is ( I am fortunate enough to meet him several times and interview once) . But as most of his fans I also believe that this is not true. Atleast 2 of his iconic films
1. Swades
2. Chak de
had good enough reasons to win this accolade long before .
Swades was released in 2004 based on the story of a successful NRI who came to India in a remote village in Haryana and left his lucrative job to stay back there. For a superstar like him it was a completely different role to play and he did it so easily. He was nominated for the best actor in 2004 but couldn't win because the awards went to Saif Ali Khan for his role in Hum Tum. I leave the justice part to all of you but wondering how could it be ? Is it due to the more popular or commercially successful film ? Even if it is then come to the next part. CHAK DE was released in the year 2007. It was a completely off beat film in those days but was a superhit and most of the credits goes to SRK who played the role of Kabir Khan so realistically completely overlapping his megastar image and this was definitely a worthy film for national awards. But who got the award ? Late Soumitra Chatterjee for his role in " Padakkhep " . Soumitra Chatterjee was a very renowned actor but have you ever heard of this film before ? Even a lot of Bengalees have not. Then if commerce is a parameter for judgement in the populist category then how on the earth SRK and Chak de was denied ?
33 years of hard work in the film industry and more than 20 years of superstardom, So many iconic films and a symbol of entertainment . Please don't say the word " Atlast" . Don't say " All well that ends well" . These are ornamental words fits well in a text book. But for me it is justice delayed means justice denied.
So yesterday the fans reacted rightfully. We are happy but why so late ?
