Imtiaz Ali Unveils Diljit Dosanjh's 'Jodi' Story Came Before 'Amar Singh Chamkila'

Imtiaz Ali, renowned for his successful films like Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal, and Rockstar, has been a prominent figure in the Hindi film industry for over 20 years.

His most recent directorial project, Amar Singh Chamkila, featuring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, was released earlier this year. In a recent conversation with Mid-Day, Imtiaz Ali discussed his experience working with Diljit Dosanjh on Amar Singh Chamkila. He revealed that before agreeing to star in Amar Singh Chamkila, Diljit had already shared the storyline of his 2023 film, Jodi, with him.

Jodi, directed by Amberdeep Singh, is a Punjabi romantic comedy period film inspired by Chamkila’s life. In Jodi, Diljit played Amar Singh Sitaara. Imtiaz recounted an interesting moment when he approached Diljit to discuss the script for Amar Singh Chamkila, and Diljit instead shared the plot of Jodi. Diljit aimed to let Imtiaz know that he had already taken on a role similar to Chamkila before committing to the new project.

Imtiaz was notably impressed by Diljit’s deep understanding of Chamkila's life, even more so than his own knowledge. Amar Singh Chamkila, a biographical film, explores the life of the legendary Punjabi folk musician of the same name. The film premiered on OTT platforms on April 12, 2024, and is now available for streaming on Netflix. Diljit Dosanjh stars in the lead role, with Parineeti Chopra portraying Chamkila's second wife, Amarjot Kaur.
